Visit or Memories and Confessions (Visita ou Memórias e Confissões) is a 1982 autobiographical film made by Manoel de Oliveira when his filmmaking debts were forcing him to sell his beloved Porto house, where he had spent many years. After the shooting, he entrusted the film to the Portuguese cinematheque and requested it not be shown to the public before his death. Oliveira died in April this year and the film was premiered at Cannes in May. In the film, Oliveira reflects on his own life, his house and family history. All sorts of memories compose his “house” and “world.” This film was dedicated to his wife, Maria Isabel de Oliveira.
The screening as the opening film of YIDFF 2015 was made possible thanks to the Oliveira family, Director of the Portuguese Film Archive Mr. Jose Manuel Costa, and the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Portugal in Tokyo.

France Is Our Mother Country is an “archive documentary” by Rithy Panh, co-founder of Cambodia’s Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, and director of many works shown at YIDFF. Otsu Koshiro’s return to Narita after forty-five years has given us what became a posthumous work, The Wages of Resistance: Narita Stories. A pioneer of Brazillian documentary, and a juror at YIDFF ’91, the late Eduardo Coutinho directed Twenty Years Later, which we will show in addition to a work he made twenty years after it. In memory of the great producer Kudo Mitsuru, who left behind some of the masterpieces of Japanese documentary history, we are also screening two works he produced.

The YIDFF Network is a volunteer group that was brought together for the inaugural YIDFF in 1989, as an initiative of Ogawa Shinsuke. Since that time, the group has continued to be active on a wide range of levels. YIDFF Network Special Screenings are organized for each Festival, with the intention of presenting films from the volunteers’ original perspectives.
