YIDFF 2005 Programs

  • International Competition: Fifteen painstakingly selected works from around the world.
  • New Asian Currents: Introducing up-and-coming Asian documentary filmmakers.
  • BORDERS WITHIN—What It Means to Live in Japan: Focusing on the relationship between film and ethnic Koreans in Japan (zainichi), this special program assembles around fifty works that deal with zainichi from both Japanese and international perspectives, examining the hitherto overlooked visual history of these people.
  • all about me? Japanese and Swiss Personal Documentaries: A collaborative project with the Visions du Reel, International Film Festival Nyon, Switzerland. Screenings and discussions of “self documentaries” in Switzerland and Japan. With the support of SWISS FILMS and Pro Helvetia.
  • Yunnan Visual Forum in Yamagata: A joint presentation by the Yunnan Visual Forum held in Kunming in Yunnan, China, and Tohoku University of Art and Design the Tohoku Culture Research Center. Screenings and discussions regarding film festivals, visual education and visual culture that foster new approaches to modern visual anthropology, as well as new filmmakers and audiences.
  • Facing the Future and Walking Tall—The Endeavors of Taiwan’s “FullShot”
  • New Docs Japan: Introducing documentaries by some of Japan’s most adept filmmakers, including topical works that have featured in international film festivals overseas.
  • YIDFF Network Special Screenings: Ever since the very first film festival, volunteer group YIDFF Network have consistently come together to play a vital role in the running of the festival. 2 films were featured in this program, selected by the YIDFF Network from their own unique viewpoint.
