In the 1960s, many legendary filmmakers emerged from Latin America in the “Third Cinema” (Tercer Cine in Spanish) movement, which explored new forms of cinema. With the rise of dictatorships, filmmakers who found it difficult to create in their homelands crossed national borders to complete their works with assistance in other countries, in an atmosphere of international solidarity. “Third Cinema” also refers to a new form of cinematic exploration that materialized in the so-called Third World (Asia, Africa and Latin America). In view of the great difficulties our society faces today, the YIDFF has programmed films from throughout Latin America that transcend national and island boundaries, not only present day works, but 1960s and ’70s explorations aiming at social reform through film, that encourage an examination of our contemporary society from the perspective of Third World resistance.

A series of Cuban films demonstrating the first signs of Third Cinema were presented at YIDFF 2011. In response to the Cuban movement, Glauber Rocha advocated Cinema Novo in Brazil. Fleeing military dictatorship and censorship, Rocha produced films, including documentaries, in places like Cuba, Chile and Portugal. Another Brazilian filmmaker, Eduardo Coutinho, who passed away suddenly at the end of 2013, was also present at the beginning of this new movement in film. In Argentina, Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino issued the statement “Towards a Third Cinema,” and produced the legendary The Hours of the Furnaces (1968). From the Department of Experimental Cinema at the University of Chile, Raúl Luis, Miguel Littín, and Carlos Flores and others showed a glimpse of their talents. Patricio Guzmán, whose latest work will be presented in the International Competition this year, completed his Battle of Chile (1975–78) in Cuba. In the same period, Colombian directors Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva made experimental works on the rights of indigenous people. Also in Colombia, Carlos Mayolo, Luis Ospina and others came to be known as “Caliwood” for starting a movement in the city of Cali that included film production, a ciné-club, and film criticism. Writer Gabriel García Márquez, for his part, contributed greatly to cinematic production in Latin America. In 1986 he co-founded the International Film and TV School (Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión or EICTV) in Cuba where Argentine film director Fernando Birri, producer of many films beginning in the 1960s, served as the school’s first Director. The festival will present some 25 programs from across Latin America accompanied by talks, including works produced by EICTV. As you bathe in the dazzling heat of people’s passion toward filmmaking in Latin America, its recurrent explosions of solidarity will surely bring fresh revelations and discoveries.
