Islands / I Lands—Cinemas in Exile
Spatiality. Physicality. They are both things we must not leave out when we think about documentaries and film production. And so, by “islands” we mean not only bodies of land surrounded by water; we also take it to mean spaces that possess their own identities even while serving as the fringes of a larger world. We can say that those of us who live in the cross-currents are ourselves islands, and the creative work of artists as well as their films themselves are all islands of a sort. In this program, these distinct, and singular, films and their creators will encounter other films and other creators, as well as an audience, and draw a map of the “I Lands” together. A place where we can speculate at our leisure: “Islands / I Lands” is now open!
Venue: Yamagata Citizens’ Hall (Small Hall)

Asian works will provide the melody, but in addition to works from the Amami Islands, Indonesia, Korea, Okinawa, and the Philippines, the work of Jean-Daniel Pollet in their Japanese premiere and important Japanese “cultural films” from the archives will also send their strains whispering, murmuring, lamenting, and rejoicing across the deep.
