The documentary as a small but illuminating window between the ordinary and the unimaginable in our post-3.11 world

Venues: Yamagata Museum of Art 1, 2, 5

On March 11, 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck the northeastern coast of Japan. In October of the same year, our film festival hastily assembled this special program of films and unscripted, raw footage that captured scenes of chaos and images of the people caught in the aftermath of the disaster. Two and a half years later, we continue to inhabit a world that seems at once changed and unchanged—while in some aspects, it remains unclear whether change has truly arrived or not. We hope that this collection of films, which so vividly depict the intersection of the ordinary and unimaginable, will serve as a window connecting those of us who find our lives transformed in so many fundamental ways in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. This special program will feature about 15 films documenting the earthquake and its aftereffects, in addition to two symposiums which will examine the relationship between film and the Tohoku region in the post-3.11 era.
