“Cinema with Us—Not to Forget: Part 1”

-

It is almost two years since the 3/11/2011 Great East Japan Earthquake disaster. Despite calls for “reconstruction,” many people still live lives overburdened by stress and on the fringe of insecurity. There is also the unsolved issue about radioactive contamination in Fukushima.

In many ways, 3/11 is not the past, and it should never be left behind as something of the past. Many filmmakers are still looking into these issues, connecting with the victims of these disasters, and continuously creating new and distinguished films.

Meanwhile, people involved in independent filmmaking and cinemas claim that the number of people who are coming to watch these films about the earthquake disaster and nuclear issues is drastically decreasing. There’s a growing gap between the output of quality films that transcend informational documentaries, and what the general audience prefers. We are concerned that this tendency is going to worsen as time passes on.

Perhaps there is a sort of “disintegration” occurring, where, while the pile of tasks at the disaster sites keep increasing, our minds are becoming saturated by the fragmented and excessive information that we receive on a daily basis.

If we do not strive to keep communicating and sharing what happened, we will lose touch of memories and learn nothing from past issues, even when these issues may be significant incidents or poignant experiences.

With the screening project Cinema with Us, we would like to keep creating and maintaining a devoted place to “keep, express and address” these memories that may become forgotten through disinterest and disintegration.

We believe that this is a necessary action for our generation, who has experienced such an unprecedented disaster, and to make sure that the following generation take in conspicuous records of the events.
