Indian documentary Bilal won YIDFF 2009’s Community Cinema Award, chosen by a jury of art house cinema and film festival programmers around the country, in addition to the New Asian Currents Award for Excellence. It will now be coming to a Japanese cinema near you! Telling the story of a three-year-old boy growing up with blind parents in Kolkata, India, the documentary is being released theatrically by Fujioka Asako, YIDFF Tokyo Office Director and colleagues. Running now in Tokyo, at Auditorium Shibuya, it will go on to Osaka, Matsumoto, Yokohama, Kobe and other cities across the country. In Bengali and Hindi with English and Japanese subtitles!

Bilal, the three-year old mischief-maker who charmed audiences at our 2009 festival, is coming back to Yamagata! We’ve watched this boy play pranks up-and-down the alleyways of Calcutta, as well as assist his blind parents with a helping hand. Bilal’s energy inspires life and laughter in audiences the world over. The film that took home the New Asian Currents Award of Excellence at YIDFF 2009—and doubled that win with a Community Cinema Award from art-house theater owners from across Japan—returns to Yamagata after 4 years. Come and meet Bilal again!
