Talk Session 2: Viewing the World from Tohoku

The charm of film is not something that finishes with the work itself or the story it tells. Films have a strong power to connect with people, create relationships within society, and sometimes transcend national borders. Using YIDFF as a model case, we will discuss the challenges of expanding the reach of film within communities.

Fujioka Asako (Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival Board Member)
On the YIDFF team since 1993. As head of Documentary Dream Center, she launched the filmmaker residency Yamagata Documentary Dojo in 2018. She is producer of Nude at Heart (2021) and other documentaries.

Yamakawa Wataru (Assistant Section Manager, Creative City of Visual Culture Division, Planning and Coordination Department, Yamagata City)
Born in Yamagata City. He began working at Yamagata City Hall in 1997. While engaged in administrative work for regional development, he was involved in the establishment of the Yamagata Film Commission in 2005, and in 2017 he was in charge when Yamagata City became Japan’s first member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Film.

Azuma Asuka (Chairperson of Namie Community Cinema Executive Committee)
Born in Koriyama City, Fukushima, she returned to her home prefecture and has been working for Machizukuri Namie since April 2020 to support community regeneration of the town. In April 2021, she launched the voluntary organization Namie Community Cinema Executive Committee to aim at revitalizing the local area through film related activities.

Yoshino Aoi (Namie Town Office, Planning and Finance Division, Namie Promotion Division, Namie Town Office, Namie Regional Development Team)
Born in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, she moved to Namie, Fukushima in 2021 after studying community development at university and beginning to rethink the idea of reconstruction on a more personal level. As a member of the Regional Development Team, she has been promoting Namie’s charms by organizing photo exhibitions and creating a local tourism map called the Tokimeki Map. She is also in charge of public relations for cinema events.
