Perspectives Japan

Five dynamic films that defy convention will be screened in Perspectives Japan, in a display of the powerful contemplation and fresh vibrancy being explored in Japanese documentary filmmaking. Okinawa: The Afterburn offers deep insight in an unflinching look at Okinawa’s ongoing post-war era. THE COCKPIT provides the audience with a front-row seat to the process of words and rhythms being created in the single room of an apartment. Under the Cherry Tree weaves together stories told by residents of a public housing complex, while the film PYRAMID: Kaleidoscope Memories of Destruction, shot on 8mm film, bestows a universality to the landscape of Saitama Prefecture’s Chichibu region, and Voyage merges the techniques of both narrative and documentary filmmaking to offer the viewer an experience of something real.
