The Joy of Transgression

This program has been on-going since the Japan Film Panorama held at the 2nd YIDFF in 1991. While changing their style of presentation along the way, these exhibits have continued to represent the current state of Japanese documentary film.

Today may seem like the end of a period of upheaval. However, it is rather that we have entered into a somewhat overwhelming time, when we do not even know in what direction we should head. But various directors have sought a new direction, and left their mark through images that convey something to their audiences and that stretch the limits of their own frameworks. This program introduces nine such films. I hope that the viewers too will go beyond their own framework and experience the “ joy of transgression.”
