The U.S.-Japan
Security Treaty allows American military bases to exist in Japan.
However, 75% of the land for such bases is appropriated from the southern
islands of Okinawa Prefecture, an area which comprises less than 0.5%
of Japan. The people of Okinawa who were made to sacrifice so much
during World War II continue to oppose this situation.
