Entry Rules and Terms
- ELIGIBILITY
- Films must have been made in a UNESCO Creative City of Film or made by a filmmaker from a UNESCO Creative City of Film.
- UNESCO Creative Cities of Film are:
Asaba (Nigeria), Bitola (Macedonia), Bradford (UK), Bristol (UK), Busan (South Korea), Cannes (France), Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Galway (Ireland), Gdynia (Poland), Kathmandu (Nepal), Łódź (Poland), Mumbai (India), Ouarzazate (Morocco), Penedo (Brazil), Potsdam (Germany), Qingdao (China), Rome (Italy), Santos (Brazil), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Sofia (Bulgaria), Sydney (Australia), Terrassa (Spain), Valladolid (Spain), Vicente Lopez (Argentina), Wellington (New Zealand), Yamagata (Japan). - UNESCO Creative Cities of Film are:
- We welcome all genres including but not limited to narrative, documentary, short, animation, experimental, etc.
- Entry films can be any length.
- Entry fee is free.
- Entry dates: July 1 to September 30, 2024.
The entrant is responsible for all necessary copyright clearances for material used in their submitted works. The Organizers will not be held responsible for damage resulting from copyright infringement lawsuits from other parties, which are entirely the responsibility of the entrant.
- Films must have been made in a UNESCO Creative City of Film or made by a filmmaker from a UNESCO Creative City of Film.
- SCREENERS

- Secure online screener links should be provided for preview.
- Make sure the film is subtitled or captioned in English, and kept accessible until March 2025.
- SUPPORT MATERIALS

The following materials should accompany each entry:
- Application sheet (credits, concise loglines, synopses)
- 1–2 stills from film
- 1 photo of filmmaker
- Director’s bio/filmography
- Trailers if available

- Selection results will be announced in mid-December 2024.
- 3 to 5 selected films will be presented with Japanese subtitles at Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2025 (autumn 2025) through 2–5 public screenings. There will be no screening fee paid to the filmmaker.
- Screening copies of the selected works must reach the YIDFF office by January 15, 2025. English subtitles are required for non-English and non-Japanese language films.
- Complete dialogue list in original language with an English or Japanese translation also required if the original is in any other language.
- DISCLAIMER
- By entering this program, you hereby grant Yamagata City permission to screen and otherwise use your film (the “Work”) in connection to this project. You represent and warrant that you have all the rights in and to the Work and /or you have the authority to grant the organizers to screen and otherwise use the Work. You also grant the organizers permission to use stills and excerpts from the Work for promotional and publicity use.
Should unforeseen events alter the format of the event, the organizers will contact and inform filmmakers in selection of how such events may affect and change the nature of their status.
