Ivens was commissioned by a group of international creosote manufacturers
to make an instructional film on the mining and use of creosote, a
substance obtained from coal tar and used to preserve wood. The Continental
Committee for the Propagation of Creosote already had a tightly constructed
plan for the film, from which Ivens made a solid scientific film on
the production of creosote, which included some animated sequences
made by the Culture Department of UFA in Berlin.
