In 1960 Ivens was invited by the Instituto Cubano del Arte y Industria Cinematograficos (ICAIC) to give courses and lectures, and to make a film with the students of the institute. Carnet de Viaje is a filmed letter to Charles Chaplin in which Joris Ivens shows the benefits of the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro. It is an impressionistic, poetic film, and lives on as an early report on the status of the revolution.
