2016-10-20 | My YIDFF!—Potato Stew Party

Volunteers and fans of YIDFF will get together over Yamagata’s famed potato stew to discuss the past and future of our festival. The party will be preceded by a screening of a documentary which was incubated by the YIDFF 2013’s Yamagata Rough Cut! program and premiered at YIDFF 2015: Under the Cherry Tree with director Tanaka Kei in attendance. Let’s share what we’ve experienced through YIDFF and think about what it means to us as we eat from the traditional pot of stewed beef and potato!

2016-10-20 | Filming 3.11: Accumulated Layers of Small Stories

It’s been five years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. This screening & discussion event will review what kind of documentaries have been produced on this subject and consider the roles future documentaries can play towards the recovery of afflicted communities. The 90-minute record of testimonies of 60 survivors Anohi o ikita watashitachi (2015)—filmed by first-year students at the Tohoku University of Art and Design (TUAD)—will be screened. What can we see from the accumulation of small voices and stories? A panel discussion will follow, inviting “documentarians” of various fields and the filmmakers themselves to reflect once again on the meaning of recording the disaster.
