2012-01-21 | “Cinema with Us” Screenings

The “Cinema with Us” project, which began with YIDFF 2011, will hold traveling screenings around Japan through to March. For these traveling screenings, mini-programs have been put together for each region from works that have been screened at YIDFF 2011. Our objective is to share images of people dealing with the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and to show how they are coming to terms with it.

Screenings through to March are scheduled for Kobe City, Kyoto City, Fukushima City and Minamisoma City in Fukushima, Miyako City and Yamada Town in Iwate, Shiogama City and Sendai City in Miyagi, and Tokyo. We are also looking into the possibility of holding screenings in Sapporo City. Details on upcoming screenings will be announced on the festival website.

Our present, and our future

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11th, 2011, the massive tsunami triggered by this unprecedented temblor submerged entire towns, and swept away precious lives, abodes, and even memories.

To make matters worse, waves swiftly inundated the external power supply that maintained reactor cooling units at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, causing meltdowns and meltthroughs in a catastrophic nuclear accident. The impact of the radioactive material went beyond Fukushima, and led to a situation that threatens the entire world via the air and sea.

As we approach the passage of one year since the disaster, normal life outwardly appears to be returning to a semblance of normality, but if we peel back the surface, we discover the reality that many different difficulties, hardships, and concerns are still ongoing, and it is no exaggeration to say that we are in the midst of a crisis with no end yet in sight.

By watching films that deal with the disaster, we hope to share this developing situation and people's thoughts and emotions with as large an audience as possible, creating new connections, and pointing to a way forward.
