Entry: Entry FAQ

Q: My film is qualified for submission to both International Competition and New Asian Currents. Which should I apply to? What is the difference?
A: The International Competition is open to mid-length and feature-length films from around the world produced in the past two years. For New Asian Currents, there is no restriction on production year or running time, but the film must be related to Asian regions or made by filmmakers with Asian roots. “Asian region” includes the Middle East. If your film is qualified for both programs, you are free to apply to either. In any case, we recommend that you make your submission early and not immediately before deadline, so as to allow as many selection committee members to view your film as possible.

Q: I’m having trouble uploading my film for YIDFF submission.
A: Upload attempts are unsuccessful or take a long time when the file format, video/sound codec, file size, or bit rate exceeds the recommended compression settings. Often times it is the bit rate that is too high. Please check in advance.

  • Container: MP4
  • Video Codec: H.264 (H.265 is not acceptable)
  • Audio Codec: AAC
  • Max File Size: 3 GB
  • Max Bit Rate: 4 Mbps
If your file does not comply with these guidelines, please try changing the settings using your editing software and output a new file. Or you can search online for video encoders or video compressors, free or available for purchase.

Q: Because the running time of my film is long, the image resolution is compromised if I compress the file to under 3GB.
A: You can upload the film divided into several files.

Q: I want to submit my film using a video sharing platform like Vimeo or YouTube.
A: Only films submitted in the designated uploaded format or a DVD will be accepted as entry.

Q: Does the film require a World Premiere or Japan Premiere status to be accepted?
A: YIDFF submission does not require World Premiere status, but for entries in International Competition category, non-Japanese films should not have had a theatrical release in Japan. For Japanese films, there are no premiere requirements, including theatrical releases.

Q: How much is the entry fee for YIDFF submission?
A: Entry is free.

Q: What is a press kit?
A: A press kit is a set of promotional material for a film. It can include posters, film stills, director’s filmography, press articles. At YIDFF, it is not a requirement at the time of film submission.
